relax as you explore. Highlights of these day-long excursions follow.
Famous Ice Cream & Cheese and Apple Cider
Drive north on Vermont Route 100 through Pittsfield, the Granville Gulf,
Warren, and Waitsfield to Waterbury, Vermont, home of
Ben and Jerry's
and Cold Hollow Cider Mill.
When you have your fill of ice cream and apple goodies, drive east through Montpelier - Vermont's Capital - to Cabot, Vermont, and the
Return to Ludlow via Interstate 89 and Vermont Routes 107 and 100.
Morgan Horses and Maple Syrup
Drive north on Vermont Route 100 through Pittsfield and turn left (west) onto Vermont Route 125.
Commune with nature (possible picnic spots) at Texas Falls Recreation Area and the Robert Frost Wayside and Interpretive Trail
(Robert Frost Memorial Drive in the Green Mountain National Forest)
as you go west toward Middlebury.
In East Middlebury, continue on VT Rte 125 as it joins U.S. Route 7 and continue north into Middlebury.
Follow Vermont Route 125 down Seymour Street, which becomes Pulp Mill Bridge Road. The UVM Morgan Horse Farm is on Battell Drive.
Retrace your route to U.S. Rte 7 and follow it south by the Middlebury Antique Center and through Historic Brandon to the
New England Maple Museum just north of Pittford.
Return to Ludlow via U.S. Route 7 and Vermont Route 103.
Marsh Billings and Quechee Gorge
Drive east on Vermont Routes 103 and 131 and north on Vermont Route 106.
If foliage peak is near, stop at Jenne Farm Road to take your own calendar photo.
Continue north on VT Rte 106 to Woodstock.
Follow Vermont Route 12 north to the Billings Farm and Museum and the
Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historic Park.
Go back through Woodstock on VT Rte 12 and stay on U.S. Rte 4 east to Quechee, Vermont.
Tour the Vermont Institute of Natural Science Raptor Center
and hike into Quechee Gorge.
To the east, there is Quechee Gorge Village and it's Antique Mall.
On the village mill pond there is Simon Pearce glass blowing and retail store.
Before you return to Ludlow, consider dining at Simon Pearce overlooking the mill pond or
Prince and the Pauper in the Woodstock Historical Society Building.
Return to Ludlow via U.S. Rte 4 west and VT 100 south.
Grafton Jamaica and Covered Bridge
Drive southeast on VT Rte 103 to Chester with its Victorian era architecture.
Continue south on Vermont Route 35 to Grafton
with its Colonial and Federal architecture, Grafton Historical Society, and cheese factory.
Follow VT Rte 35 south to Vermont Rte 30 and the Scott Covered Bridge,
built in 1870 -- once the longest wooden span in Vermont.
Continue on Vermont Rte 30 to Jamaica State Park where you can hike to Hamilton Falls, picnic, tour the nature center, or cool off in the swimming hole.
Exit the state park, turn right onto Vermont Routes 100 and 30.
Follow VT Rte 30 to Stratton Mountain Access Road and take the gondola to the summit.
Return to VT Rte 30, follow it west to VT Rte 11, and take VT Rte 11 east to Peru and experience the JJ Hapgood Store.
Return to Ludlow via VT Rte 11 and 100.
If you couldn't find what you're looking for at JJ Hapgood, you'll find it at the Vermont Country Store on VT Rte 100 in Weston on your way.
Hildene via Weston and Mt. Tabor
Drive south on Vermont Route 100 over Terrible Mountain to Weston.
Here you will find the Vermont Country Store.
After picking up a lunch at the Weston Village Store, head west on Lawrence Hill Road to Landgrove Road to Little Michigan Road to the Danby-Mt.Tabor Road.
This "Closed In Winter" road takes you into the White Rocks Recreation Area and to a Long Trail / Applachian Trail parking area.
There are several hiking opportunities here.
Continue through Mt. Tabor to U.S. Rte 7.
If you have hiked the day away, turn right and return to Ludlow via Wallingford using U.S. Route 7, Vermont Route 140, and Vermont Route 103.
Otherwise, turn left and follow U.S. Route 7 to VT Rte 7A in East Dorset.
Follow VT Rte 7A through Manchester, Vermont, passing the Equinox Hotel to Hildene , the Robert Todd Lincoln home.
